Zebra Pot - Paper Mache
The zebra pot was made from strip paper mache laid over a football with a CD attached to it to form a base.We taped the CD in place and then used the strips of paper to begin forming the shape. For the first layer we used paper dipped in water with no glue, as we didn't want the paper to stick to the ball. We pasted on enough layers to make the pot fairly sturdy. Then we used a craft knife and carefully cut the pot in half to remove the ball and the CD. Next we used masking tape to stick the two sections back together and covered the pot with several more layers of strips, both inside and out. Once the pot was dry we coated it with cream emulsion. Then we marked out the zebra pattern with a pencil. The black strips were painted on with an enamel paint which took ages to dry but luckily we only needed one coat. The enamel paint cracked a bit as it dried, but instead of being a disaster it added interest to the piece. The cream stripes were coated with wood glue and the whole pot was rolled in fine white beach sand to give it a little texture. The inside of the pot is painted with the cream emulsion. The final finish was three coats of matt varnish. This pot is in a private collection in England.
