Terracotta Fruit Bowl

by Sue
(Australia)

Terracotta Fruit Bowl

Terracotta Fruit Bowl

This was my first attempt at a paper mache bowl.

I soaked 10 layers of newspaper sheets in PVA glue, then draped them over a ceramic bowl covered in cling wrap.

When the newspaper was sufficiently dry, I lifted it off and found that it was too flexible and looked unbalanced. So I built it up with lots of pulp till I was happy with the shape. I like the bumpy texture and it's very strong and solid.

I coated it with Terra Tite, a terracotta sealer, then gave it a coat of dark green acrylic paint, which I wiped off with a cloth, leaving just enough to tone down the terracotta and make it look weathered.

very 'country'

I think this looks so wonderfully 'olde worlde country' and it's charming!
Looking at the photo, it looked at first as if it had been carved from wood!
Excellent-especially for a 1st attempt!

I love your fruit bowl, what an unusual, but very effective shape. I also love the colour....thanks once again for sharing on our site :-)

Lovely

This is great Sue. I really love the shape and the colour.

I've never heard of Terra Tite before but I'll certainly be on the look out for it here in the UK.

I love all things earthy when it comes to decoration.
