Strip Paper Mache Bowl
'Leather Look'

Annemarie made this strip paper mache bowl. We call it the leather look bowl because everyone who has seen it thinks it is made of leather.

Paper Mache Strip Bowl

This bowl was made using an old wok as a mould. Annemarie alternated strips of newspaper with strips of paper from the yellow pages.

Because the paper dried at different rates it left her with an interesting, slightly uneven look.

She used this to her advantage when she decorated it and decided to make it look as if it had been shaped from leather.

She did this by using a mixture of artists' acrylic paints and finishing it off with a couple of layers of tan shoe polish.

Everyone who has handled it so far has thought it was actually made from real leather.

They are certainly surprised when we tell them it's actually made from paper mache.
