Storage Box / Side Table

by Sue
(Australia)

I made this storage box / side table by recycling an old milk crate and covering it inside and out with paper pulp. I gave the outside a textured finish with a mix of joint plaster, water and PVA glue. When it was dry I painted it with acrylic house paint.

This project took several months to complete because the pulp was quite thick and took a long time to dry out in our humid climate.

The handles are pieces of timber, glued and screwed in place prior to plastering.

The lid started off by cutting the base from a second milk crate; the idea was that this would sit nicely in the top of the box and would be strong enough to sit on. I had trouble getting the smooth finish I wanted on it, so I glued and screwed a piece of plywood onto the top of it. After much sanding and filling, it was eventually smooth enough and got a coat of paint. (I make life hard for myself sometimes!!)

I put a clear acrylic cutting mat on top to protect the surface from hot drinks and spills.

I'm making another one of these boxes, but, to keep things simple, the lid will be made from a piece of plywood with some stoppers on the inside to hold it in place.

Storage Box

You're quite right about all of that Karen. I have a dark lounge and quite a lot of timber, so I've been adding some white here and there to lighten up the look... and yes, the texture is the real feature. I think it looks like meringue and wasn't sure I'd like it, but it fits in well.

Cheers,
Sue

Texture
by: Karen

I think the decorating is all in the texture of this piece and in its contrast with the other things in the room.

I know it's difficult to see in the photo but it appears to be standing next to a dark coloured chair or sofa.

I really like the concept of texture and contrast for giving impact to a piece.

Decorating
by: Sue

Hi Anonymous,

I'm not particularly 'into' fussy decor. I like to keep things simple and uncluttered. I have other things in my home that provide more detail for the eye, so my side tables aren't designed as feature items.

On the other hand, I'd be interested in any suggestions you might have for decorating it. Who knows, you might change my mind!

It looks like the inside of a cool box - why don't you decorate it?

Brilliant!

Thanks for sharing this, Sue. It's a great idea and it looks fantastic.

I love the idea that it's strong enough to sit on too. I think we'll be on the look out for an old milk crate or two :-)
