Small Picture Frame - Paper Pulp

Small Paper Mache Picture Frame

This is a small picture frame that was made specially for one of Annemarie's paintings.

The back of the frame is made from a stiff sheet of card from an old box. It was cut to size then covered with pulp.

Once dry, it was stained with dark oak wood stain and set aside to dry while we worked on the front.

The front of the frame was made from pulped paper laid onto a frame cut from a cardboard box. It was important to weight this part as it dried to prevent it from warping too much.

We did this by stretching a sheet of fabric across the frame and weighting the edges of the fabric with mugs full of sand.

This allowed the pulp to dry through the fabric and prevented the weight from marking the damp pulp.

Once dried it was coated with white PVA glue and decorated with course sand.

Both sides or the frame were glued together with white glue leaving the top open to insert the mounting and the painting.

Several layers of matt polyurethane varnish were used to seal it once it had thoroughly dried out.
