Sand Pot - Paper Mache

Sand Pot - Paper Mache Our Sand Pot was made from strip paper mache laid over a large balloon.

It stands about 450mm high so, because of the large size, we covered it in about 20 layers of paper before removing the balloon.

It's decorated with two different colours of builder's sand. We were having some work done on the house at the time and the two big heaps were just too tempting.

The darker area has many small coloured pebbles in it which gives it a really nice texture. The pale sand is finer and has a much smoother texture.

We also used a half-moon shape cut from an old potato sack to add more colour and texture.

The final finish on this pot was a a matt polyurethane varnish. We were rather disappointed with the end result as the varnish seemed to dry with a slightly shiny finish which we felt gave the pot a plastic look.

This work is now in a private collection in England.
