Paper Pulp Bowl

Beach Bowl

This paper pulp bowl is called the Beach Bowl. We used a wok as a mould, lined it with cling film and spread a fairly thick layer round the inside of the wok.

Care must be taken to ensure it dries out really well before decorating. Thicker layers dry out quite well in a hot dry climate but if you live somewhere cool or humid then I recommend building up your project in thinner layers.

We decorated this one with coarse builder's sand and oil paints. The final finish is a matt varnish.

This was a simple project but very effective because of the unusual way it is decorated. Many people have commented on the lovely blue and green hues and the way the sheen of the oil paint contrasts with the rough texture of the sand.

Creating simple shapes and adding a little drama by experimenting with different decorating techniques is a wonderful way to get creative.

It is in Karen's own collection.
