Paper Mache Table

Annemarie made this paper mache table to replace an old vacuum cleaner box that use to stand next to my sofa. I know, I'm terrible. But it was always my intention to turn the box into something interesting.Anyway, Annemarie beat me to it. She made the table out of cardboard boxes and many layers of strip paper mache. The top of the table is a whole box which she stuffed with crumpled newspaper to give it additional strength before layering the strips. She also gave it a couple of coats of PVA glue to prevent the card absorbing too much moisture when she started adding the paper mache. The legs are made from another box. She formed them into triangles like giant Toblerones, inserted them into holes, she'd made in the table top and then began pasting the layers. There are about 15 layers altogether and the table is very sturdy. It's decorated with household emulsion and artists' acrylics and sealed with a couple of coats for polyurethane varnish. On top of this it also has a couple of layers of clear shoe polish. This just gives it an extra layer of protection against spills. It works too, as I spilt my coffee on it the other day and it wiped off without a trace.
