Make Your Own Paper Mache Mask

This paper mache mask looks great on any wall and is really simple to make.

Paper Mache Mask

I have a small collection of African carvings hanging on various walls of my house and I wanted an extra mask to go in my lounge.

I wasn't planning a trip back to South Africa any time soon so I decided to make my own.

I used a cardboard box and cut out a basic shape which I modified it as I went on. With hindsight this may not have been the best move as my friend's ten year old son took one look at it and asked why it had horns. Never mind, I like it.

I used the strip method of paper mache and PVA glue for my mask.

To decorate it I used artist's acrylic paint and covered it with black boot polish once it was dry.

The boot polish adds depth to the colour, gives a lovely polished wood effect and serves as protection for the finished work.
