Paper Mache Flower Vase

Paper Mache Flower Vase

The body of this paper mache flower vase started life as a long balloon and the base was made from a pickle jar lid. The 'leaves' were made separately and paper mache'ed on during the construction phase.

The vase has about 6 layers of paper altogether and feels strong and sturdy even though it still has a little flexibility.

Initially it just had the leaves on it and we weren't sure how to decorate it. My mom said it looked like a dinosaur egg, much to Annemarie's disgust, and that's when she decided to add the flowers and paint it a dark green to give the impression of leaves.

It's decorated with artists' acrylic paints and sealed with polyurethane varnish for protection.

I think it looks decorative enough as it is but it could also be used for artificial flowers too. We tried it with some lovely Zulu wire and bead flowers but they weren't quite the right thing. Perhaps a dried flower arrangement might look good.
