Paper Mache Dog - Life-Size Rottweiler

Paper Mache Dog

This is "Barney", a paper mache dog based on a friend's rottweiler called Sara.

Barney was initially formed using only plastic supermarket packets roughly held in position with masking tape.

We then layered him with strips of newspaper. We covered him in about 15 layers, allowing him to dry thoroughly between every three layers.

Barney was decorated using black household emulsion and white emulsion with acrylic paint added to get the tan colour.

His whiskers and eyebrows (which you can't really see in the photo) were made by carefully gluing bristles from a paintbrush into small holes made with a sewing needle.

He was sealed all over with matt polyurethane varnish and then his nose was given a couple of coats of gloss varnish to give him that healthy 'wet-nose' look. His eyes were also finished in gloss to give them a nice shine.

Just like Sara, the inspiration behind the piece, Barney was photographed making himself comfortable on the bed.
