Paper Mache Candlestick
This paper mache candlestick started out like as a plastic mushroom container. We’re always looking for creative ways to recycle things rather than just throwing them in the recycling bin. It’s especially good if you can find something to do with old plastic as it can take decades to biodegrade.
Annemarie had the idea to make this one based on some candle holders we’d made previously using old cereal boxes. I must say it was a lot easier to do than the earlier design we used.
It’s quick and easy to make and it can be decorated to fit into any colour scheme. This one’s decorated using Jacobean oak wood stain.
Please note that, as paper mache may easily catch fire, this is not to be used with a burning candle.
We got around this problem by getting hold of some battery operated tea lights which we dropped into the hole in a top of a real candle. The hole was formed by allowing the candle to burn down a bit while it was standing on a metal candle holder.
This video shows how the battery operated candle flickers just like a real one.
