Metallic Paper Mache Vase

Metalic Paper Mache Vase

This large metallic paper mache vase would make a great addition to any living room. The great thing is that it's quick and easy to make too.

Annemarie started out with a large square of corrugated cardboard for the base and then cut four sides to match the square at the bottom and which taper to a smaller square at the top.

She then added a couple of layers of paper mache strips to one side of each piece of card. This is so you don't have to PM the inside of the vase once you've put it together. It can be a nightmare trying to reach inside something as big as this to pm both sides.

Once that was done she used masking tape to fix it together before starting on the strip mache for the outside. Because the cardboard was quite thick and sturdy, and there were already a couple of layers of paper on the inside, she only needed three layers of paper mache strips on the outside.

To decorate it she started out with a base coat of two layers of lamp black artist acrylic paint. Metalic Paper Mache Detail The metallic look was achieved by using two different metallic acrylic paints, copper and bronze.

Once the black was fully dry she used a sponge dampened with a little water to apply a thin layer of the copper paint.

Next she did the same with the bronze and built up the layers until she was happy with the finish.

The final coat is a spirit-based matt varnish to give it extra protection.

We only fairly recently discovered these metallic paints and Annemarie really loves working with them.

It's quite surprising how good it can actually look when applied to paper mache.

If you'd like to have a go at making your own metallic paper mache vase you should be able to get the paints at any good art or craft store.
