Large Sculpture - Paper Mache Mother and Child

Large Sculpture This large sculpture of a mother and child stands about 155cm (approx 5'1") high. It was specially created for an exhibition in Lincoln Castle, UK.

The base was created from a circle of cardboard and the hips shoulders and both heads were shaped on balloons.

The "skirt" was created by pasting sheets of newspaper over four cardboard strips attached to the base and the balloon that formed the hips.

The waist was done with wads of newspaper taped in place and then paper mached over.

The baby's body was also formed from wadded newspaper and the blanket from pasted newspaper sheets covered with paper mache strips.

The mother's arms were newspaper sheets rolled round an old wire coat hanger.

Like many of our works this one is finished with sand. It gives the look and feel of a stone statue.

We sealed it off with several layers of matt varnish.

This piece is in a private collection in Manchester, UK. On the basis of this work we were commissioned to create a similar piece which is also in a collection in Manchester.
