Large Picture Frame - Paper Mache

Large Paper Mache Frame

This large picture frame was the first we ever made and is one of a pair.

Annemarie had painted two watercolours for an exhibition and we decided to frame them in an unusual way.

The back is just a rectangle of cardboard cut to size, covered with a few layers of strip paper mache and finished with wood stain and a couple of coats of matt varnish.

The front is made from two rectangular 'windows' cut from cardboard. The smaller one was glued to the larger one and then covered with a few layers of strips.

When it was dry we covered the smaller rectangle with old potato sacking. We glued one edge of the sacking just underneath the inside edge and then stretched the sacking over it and glued it down. We extended a little of the sacking over the outer rectangle to keep it in place.

We then coated the outer rectangle with a thick layer of wood glue and covered it with coarse sand. We had a piece of glass from an old clip frame to fit inside the inner rectangle.

We put the glass in and then laid the painting onto it. After checking the painting was correctly positioned we glued the back in place along the two sides and the bottom, leaving the top open so the painting can be removed.

This is unusual in that the mounting for the picture is actually on the outside of the frame.
