DOORSTOP CAT

by Anne Antonia Beltane
(Teynham, Kent uk)

On guard?

On guard?

I needed a doorstop for my bedroom door, and I love cats, and that mixed with a bit of imagination and a lot of paper mache resulted in my whimsical-looking DOORSTOP CAT!

I made a basic frame shape, appx 68cm in height, from chicken wire and covered that in masking tape.

I made up about 1/2 a kitchen bowl-full of paper mache pulp ( mixed to a 'clay' constituency) and covered the frame with it.

With the second coat, I padded out areas all over the cat to make the end result look more like a fabric patchwork effect, oh, and I also gave him a nose and made 2 buttons from the 'clay' for his eyes.

When he was dry, I painted the cat with acrylic paints, to look like patchwork material, painted his eyes green and stuck them on with bostik.

I added detail (stitching, whiskers etc) with a permanent black pen.

I love the color and shape of your cat. What did you use to weight the cat?

Sharing secrets
by: Sue

Thanks for sharing your (not so) secrets Anne! I haven't yet been successful in achieving that really smooth finish.

I recently made a footstool using a plastic milk crate as the framework and ended up with a final covering of joint plaster to achieve a smooth finish on the lid.

To Sue

Thanks for your comments, Sue!
In the final layer, I used my (not so) secret recipe. Instead of newspaper, I used a roll of cheap toilet paper, thick flour/water/salt paste and a big helping of PVA glue. As I put it on, I continually smoothed it. Finally, I coated it with about 5 or 6 layers of white emulsion paint, which really does help with smoothing out and covering any blemishes or tiny cracks etc.
Thanks again for your kind comments. X

Doorstop Cat
by: Sue

Hi Anne,

I've been admiring the smooth finish of your lovely doorstop cat and wondered how you got your paper mache pulp to such a smooth consistency?

I also love the patchwork idea. A great way to incorporate colours into a room.
