Distressed Pot - Paper Mache

Distressed Pot - Paper Mache This was called the distressed pot because the decoration looks a little worn.

We made it by pasting strips of newspaper over a party balloon. We used about 5 or 6 layers and although the pot is very strong, it is still quite flexible.

Once the pot was completely dry, we coated it with several coats of cream emulsion paint.

When this was dry, we lightly sanded it and coated it with a mixture of burnt umber and burnt sienna artist's acrylic.

We then sanded this with a fairly coarse sand paper to allow the cream to show through, giving it the 'designer distressed' look.

Finally the pot was given 3 coats of clear matt varnish to seal and protect it.

The feel of this piece is quite interesting. It almost has a plastic texture to it. The finish is very smooth and it's flexible enough to bend yet strong enough to return to the original shape.

This piece is in a private collection in the UK.
