Coffin Shaped Coffee Table

by Stephanie Hinton
(London, UK)

I had a mattress delivered to my new flat the other day and it dawned on me that the box it came in would be the perfect size for a coffee table that I so desperately need for my bedroom.

Not being able to afford to buy a table I started thinking about ways I could make one... I toyed with a few ideas but came to the conclusion that I had a massive stack of old news papers that were getting in my way... I looked up about paper mache online and found this site.

I wasn't able to find anything like I was proposing online so I have decided to give it a shot and try to make a sturdy enough table for my visitors and I to eat off. As we don't have a dining table in our apartment and its a bit embarrassing for a chef to have friends over for a wonderful dinner they have to eat off the floor!!!

Some of my friends have said it's impossible so I am even more determined to make it happen!!!

Great idea - Keep us posted.
by: Karen

Hi Stephanie,

This sounds like a super project and a bit of a challenge. It can be done though.

We'd love to hear how it turns out and see some photos.

It's interesting because I just wrote up the answer to our reader's question for the August issue of our Trash to Treasure e-zine yesterday, and it's all about how to prevent warping.

Warping could be an issue with a project this size. Of course, you're more than welcome to sign up for the e-zine to get the answers, but if you're in a hurry to get started and you'd like a sneak preview of our suggestions, drop me a line via the contacts form.

If you run into any problems along the way do get in touch. I can't guarantee we'll have the answers, but we'll probably be able to find someone who can help.

Best of luck with it and remember to let us know how you get on.
